Eye Laser Treatment in Imo State

Laser peripheral iridotomy makes a tiny opening in the iris to let fluid drain freely. It is used in angle-closure glaucoma, and in eyes at risk of it, to prevent a sudden dangerous rise in pressure.

Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy clears the membrane behind a lens implant that can become cloudy months or years after cataract surgery. Vision that has slowly gone misty again after a successful cataract operation is usually this, and the treatment takes only a few minutes.

Selective laser trabeculoplasty improves the eye’s natural drainage in open-angle glaucoma, and can reduce or delay the need for daily drops.

Laser treatment is done sitting at a machine much like the one used to examine your eyes. Drops numb the eye first, and a small contact lens may be rested against it to focus the beam.

You may see bright flashes during the treatment and your vision may be blurred for a short time afterwards, so bring someone with you. Most people return to normal activity the same day.

You may be given drops to use for a few days afterwards, and your eye pressure is usually checked within a short time of the treatment.

Laser is not an alternative to every operation, and it is not a cure for glaucoma. What it does well is treat specific, well-defined problems precisely and without opening the eye.

Whether it suits you depends on the anatomy of your eye, the state of the drainage angle, the clarity of the media the beam has to pass through, and what has already been tried. That is why laser is always preceded by a proper examination, and often by gonioscopy or OCT in our investigation unit.
