Community Outreach
St Joseph’s Eye Hospital Mgbirichi takes eye care out to the communities that cannot reach a hospital. Our outreach aims at reaching the unreached — creating awareness, educating people about their eyes, and providing treatment where there is none.
Why we go out to the communities
Most cases of avoidable blindness are seen in rural communities, where health care facilities are primitive or non-existent. Blindness is more pronounced there than among urban settlers. Because of poverty, ignorance and lack of awareness, these people remain needlessly blind.
The social and financial hardship created by blindness gravely affects individuals and families in particular, and the nation at large. Our community outreach programme exists to close that gap.
What our outreach sets out to do
Every outreach we run is built around five objectives:
Find and treat cataract
Identify people living with cataract and provide the surgery that restores their sight.
Detect other eye disease
Pick up glaucoma, corneal disease and other conditions, and provide appropriate treatment.
Educate on eye care
Teach patients and the wider community how to look after their eyes and when to seek help.
Create awareness of our services
Make people aware of the facilities and services available at the hospital.
Open the route to care
Generate demand for the hospital’s facilities so that people who need treatment actually come for it.
Reach the unreached
Go to the communities that would otherwise never see an eye care professional.

Working with communities to improve knowledge, attitudes and skills around eye health.

Giving our clinical staff real training opportunities in the field.
How an outreach is organised
Reaching the underserved is done effectively through our community service. We work closely with community leaders and service groups to set up the eye camps — they know their people, and their involvement is what brings patients out.
An eye camp brings screening, diagnosis and health education directly into the community. Patients who need surgery or treatment that cannot be given on site are identified and brought in to the hospital.
Community involvement and health education
Poverty, ignorance, superstition and socioeconomic factors all play a part in keeping poor blind people from accessing eye care services. Our active involvement and health education are what make the outreach programme work.
Health education enables families and communities to improve their health — and in these cases their eyesight — by improving their knowledge, their attitudes and their skills.
Staff training and development
The community outreach programme also benefits our own staff. Working in the field, away from the equipment and support of the hospital, gives our clinical team training and experience they cannot get anywhere else.
