Spectacles and Contact Lenses in Imo State
Our optical service dispenses spectacles and contact lenses to your prescription, on site at the hospital. A great deal of poor vision needs nothing more than the right pair of glasses.

Lenses we dispense
Cut and fitted in our own optical workshop.
Single vision lenses for long sight, short sight and reading. The everyday correction that solves most poor vision.
For astigmatism, where the eye is shaped more like a rugby ball than a football and needs correction that differs by direction.
Lenses that darken in sunlight, and coatings that cut glare and reflection. Useful for driving and for long hours of close work.
Filter part of the blue light from screens and lighting, for people who spend long periods at a computer or phone.
For strong prescriptions that are difficult to correct comfortably in spectacles, where lenses give a wider and clearer field of view.
Prosthetic lenses improve the appearance of a disfigured eye. Bandage lenses protect the cornea while it heals.
Getting the prescription right
Spectacles are only as good as the refraction behind them. Your prescription is measured in our clinic, and for children and young adults we use drops that relax the focusing muscle so that the true prescription is not masked.
We also examine the health of the eye itself. Blurred vision is usually refractive, but not always, and it is worth being certain.
Contact lenses
Contact lenses suit many people, including those with high prescriptions who are difficult to correct in spectacles. They come with a responsibility: hygiene and correct handling matter enormously in preventing corneal infection, and we take the time to teach it properly.
Never sleep in lenses that are not meant for it, and never rinse them in tap water. If an eye becomes red or painful, take the lens out and come in. A corneal infection in a contact lens wearer can move very fast.
We also fit prosthetic contact lenses, which improve the appearance of a disfigured eye, and bandage lenses used to protect the cornea while it heals.
Children and spectacles
A child does not know what normal vision looks like, so they rarely complain. Watch instead for a child sitting very close to the television, holding books to their face, screwing up their eyes, tilting their head, complaining of headaches after schoolwork, or losing interest in reading.
Wearing the correct spectacles does not weaken a child’s eyes or make them dependent. That belief keeps a great many children seeing badly for no reason at all.
Uncorrected refractive error in a young child can also lead to a lazy eye, which can become permanent if it is not treated in time. That is why we recommend an eye test before a child starts school.
